Procedure to apply for an extension

You should work with your host supervisor and host department HR administrator to discuss your interest in extending your program prior to your program end date. Your host department will then be responsible for completing the J-1 extension request via iStart on your behalf. You are encouraged to begin this process at least 1 month in advance of your program end date. Per U.S. federal regulations, OIE must receive the extension request on or before your program end date.

In order for your host department to complete the program extension request in iStart, they will need the following documents from you:

  • valid passport
  • most current I-94 record
  • current DS-2019
  • proof of financial support for the period of the extension
    • At Georgia Tech, a J visiting scholar must demonstrate a minimum of $2000 per month for the scholar, $700 per month for the spouse, and $400 per month for each dependent child (under age 21). A J student intern must demonstrate a minimum of $1800 per month with the same additional amounts for dependents.
  • proof you have maintained continuous health insurance that meets or exceeds the U.S. Department of State Standards
    • Proof of insurance is an insurance ID card, a policy summary showing benefits and dates of coverage. When your insurance is a plan offered through Georgia Tech then the summary of benefits is not required. Please refer to the OIE website for more detail.
