An introduction to Georgia Tech and the City of Atlanta
Georgia Institute of Technology (“Georgia Tech” or “GT” for short), one of the premier research universities in the United States, was established by an Act of the State of Georgia Legislature on October 13, 1885. GT is best known for its top-ranked academics, world-renowned faculty, and highly motivated students. The U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks Georgia Tech as one of the top 10 public universities in the country.

Over the years, Georgia Tech has expanded its resources to serve nearly 40,000 students, more than 23,000 of whom are seeking graduate degrees. Our students come from more than 120 countries to pursue studies in the Colleges of Business, Architecture, Engineering, Computing, Sciences, and Liberal Arts. These six colleges offer 35 undergraduate and over 100 masters and doctoral programs, representing a wide range of traditional and interdisciplinary studies.

The Institute occupies more than 450 acres and 237 buildings. A great addition to Georgia Tech is Technology Square (or “Tech Square” for short), a $180 million-dollar multi-facility complex that is home to the Scheller College of Business. Technology Square is located in the heart of Midtown, Atlanta’s vibrant and growing technology corridor that offers students and faculty extensive exposure to the Atlanta business community.

Atlanta is the capital of the state of Georgia and its largest city, the site of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, and one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. The Atlanta metropolitan area’s population is approximately 6 million, making Georgia Tech’s home the 9th largest city by population in the United States. Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is among the busiest airports in the world in terms of passenger volume.

Atlanta is the undisputed business and cultural center of the Southeast region of the U.S., and consistently ranked as one of the top 10 places to for high-tech and international career opportunities. More than 1,600 international businesses are located in the Atlanta area along with the headquarters of many Fortune 500 companies, including the Coca Cola Company, Delta Air Lines, Home Depot, Newell Rubbermaid, and Truist Bank.

Atlanta is also fast becoming a major media production locale. The TV news channel CNN and its parent company Turner Media are based in Atlanta as are several film studios, and many TV shows and internationally-distributed movies are filmed in and around the city.

Overall Atlanta combines classic small-town southern hospitality with all the amenities of a cosmopolitan city. The moderate cost of living, which is below the national average, and the pleasant climate which permits year-round outdoor activities, makes Atlanta appealing to many.

Climate and Wardrobe
Please make sure to research average temperatures and check the weather forecast. There are a number of weather websites you can use, including http://www.weather.com (this website and its Weather Channel TV station are also based in Atlanta!) for the time that you will travel to Atlanta. You'll want to make sure that you arrive in appropriate clothing and are prepared to walk outside if necessary. [Click here to learn more about Atlanta’s climate and clothing suggestions]

Atlanta has four distinct seasons, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy a range of comfortable climates. During the fall and spring, Atlanta is quite comfortable with temperatures of 70-80° F (21-26° C). Summers can be quite hot and humid, with temperatures sometimes reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38⁰ C), and winters are normally mild with a few colder spells. Winter temperatures average about 45⁰ F (7⁰ C), with colder temperatures at night. Atlanta’s annual rainfall is about 48 in (122 cm).

We suggest buying as much of your clothes/wardrobe as possible here unless you feel the cost would be prohibitive. While typical dress on campus is casual and entirely according to your personal taste (and based on the weather), you may wish to check with your supervisor to see if there are any dress expectations for your daily work.

Getting from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech is located in the area of Atlanta called “Midtown”, just off of the I-75/I-85 connector highway, about 12 miles north of the airport. The 2 best ways to get to campus from the Atlanta airport are taxi, rideshare service, and MARTA (Atlanta’s mass transit system). [Click here to learn more about travel options in the city of Atlanta, including from the airport]

Taxi: There is a taxi stand outside of the baggage claim at the airport. Most taxi companies have a flat, standard rate from the airport to Midtown of around $32. You may pay a little less or a little more. At the airport there is a taxi stand where you will be directed to available taxis. As your driver how the price will be determined, either flat rate or meter, before placing your luggage into the vehicle. If you need help, do not hesitate to ask an airport employee; we’re known to be polite here in Georgia!

Rideshare service: Uber and Lyft are the 2 most common rideshare services in Atlanta, and both have frequent availability to and from the airport. The Uber and Lyft apps can be downloaded for free to your mobile device. There are clearly marked designated locations at the airport where you can find your rideshare car. Entering or leaving a rideshare vehicle outside of these designated locations is prohibited. As with taxis, be careful: look for the license plate of the car you have arranged for in the app, do not accept a ride from anyone that you did request in a rideshare service app.

MARTA: Follow the signs from baggage claim at the airport to get to the airport MARTA station. At the station, you will have to purchase a Breeze Card which will be your train ticket. This is a re-loadable card that you can continue to use to ride the MARTA train and bus system during your time in Atlanta. Purchasing a Breeze Card costs $2 (one-time fee), and a one-way fare anywhere in the city will cost you $2.50. As the airport is the final southbound stop, you can only take MARTA towards the north. The 2 closest stops to Georgia Tech are North Avenue and Midtown. North Avenue station is near the southeast corner of the Georgia Tech campus, close to Bobby Dodd Stadium. The Midtown station is near the northeast corner of campus, close to Tech Square (see campus map below). The Georgia Tech Trolley Bus (Gold Route) provides free pickups at the Midtown station, with drop-offs at a number of campus locations. You can view operating hours for all GT bus routes here.

Suggestions for temporary (short-term) housing

If you have not arranged your long-term housing by the time you arrive in Atlanta, you may consider the following for temporary, reasonably priced lodging convenient to the Georgia Tech campus. The hotels listed are within walking distance to GT or accessible by MARTA, the Atlanta transportation system. Many (but not all) hotels offer free breakfast included in the room fee, so ask before you reserve a room. [Click here for a listing for short-term housing near GT, including price estimates]

Hotel room prices change often based on demand, but the key below will give you an idea of how much a room in each hotel might cost per night:
$ = up to $75/night
$$ = $76-$100/night
$$$ = $101-$125/night
$$$$ = more than $126/night

You may wish to explore other lodging options. There are many travel websites that can search for hotels in the U.S., including hotels.com, kayak.com, travelocity.com, hotwire.com, priceline.com, and expedia.com. You may also consider private accommodation using the website Airbnb.com

When making your housing arrangements, consider how you will get to the hotel from the airport, and from the hotel to Georgia Tech. You should also consider the area that the hotel is in. Georgia Tech is located in Midtown, and nearby hotels tend to be more expensive than hotels in other areas of the city. Many hotels in the Downtown area are relatively convenient to Tech and are cheaper than hotels in Midtown, but this area generally empties out at the end of the workday and on weekends as it is primarily a business district. This may make some people uncomfortable. There are many budget hotels near the airport, and many offer free shuttle service to the airport.

Housing tips
Unfortunately Georgia Tech does not offer on-campus housing for international scholars. You may wish to consider the following in your search for long-term housing. [Click here for suggestions to keep in mind when looking for housing]

You could stay in temporary housing and walk or drive around neighborhoods near campus looking for “For Rent” or “For Lease” signs.

Helpful Hints to Assist in Your Housing Search:

  • If you are arriving early and need a place to stay during your search for housing, you can stay at a hotel in the area.
  • Contact an Apartment Locator Service (apartments are usually rented in person, but apartment locator services may assist you before you arrive) such as Apartment Guide
  • Refer to the GT Parking & Transportation website for maps/schedules of campus shuttles and for information on alternative transportation, including MARTA.

Remember to use caution and do your research regarding your rights and responsibilities as tenants. While most people offer legitimate deals for housing, there are some who might see an opportunity to take advantage of someone who is not aware of their rights.

Housing options and descriptions of some Atlanta neighborhoods
As with all cities, housing options in Atlanta vary from neighborhood to neighborhood as do their expense, safety and convenience.

Downtown
Downtown Atlanta is the location of many corporate or regional headquarters, city, county, state and federal government facilities, sporting facilities, and is the central tourist attraction of the city. Downtown Atlanta is also home to Georgia State University. This area is a less common option for off-campus student housing for Georgia Tech students. Downtown Atlanta includes several hotels, restaurants and other attractions (including Centennial Olympic Park) as well as some residential neighborhoods.

Midtown
Georgia Tech is in Midtown Atlanta, which is situated between Downtown to the south and Buckhead to the north. Midtown includes high-rise condos, apartments, hotels, skyscrapers with office space and busy shopping areas. It is also home to quiet residential neighborhoods, and Midtown's focal point is the expansive green space of Piedmont Park. Midtown Atlanta is a very popular place for students to live because of its convenient location. Midtown's proximity to Georgia Tech allows one to walk, bike or take the Tech Trolley to campus. Grocery stores, shops, hotels, restaurants, bars/nightclubs, and the large Piedmont Park are all easily accessible in Midtown.

Westside
Atlanta’s Westside offers a handful of apartment complexes and small homes, ideal for students. The area is rapidly developing, with new restaurants and niche shops blossoming on every corner. Though this means excellent additions to residents’ social lives, it also means increasing prices. The commute from Howell Mill or Marietta Street may not be feasible on foot, but the distance is still manageable with a car or provided shuttles by certain apartment complexes. Westmar, Alexan Metro West and Post Collier can all be found on the Westside.

Just to the east past Midtown, many students already frequent Virginia Highland for its restaurants, bars and shops. Virginia Highland is known for attracting twenty-somethings and offering lower rents, while still having a mix of residents and being relatively safe. Though it will take a car, bike or long walk to MARTA to get to campus, it offers plenty of entertainment options within walking distance. It’s also home to multiple coffee shops for those who prefer such venues for studying.

Social Security Number: What is it and do you need one?
A Social Security Number (SSN) is a permanent nine-digit identification number administered by the Social Security Administration, an agency of the U.S. federal government. SSNs are required for anyone employed in the U.S. because it tracks income for employers and the IRS, but is not required for anything else. [Click here for more details about SSNs]

Can you receive a Social Security Number?
J-1 visa holders are eligible for a Social Security Number whether employed or not. If a J visa holder is not employed, OIE would encourage you to think carefully about whether you would like to apply for an SSN because of some dangers of having one (see below). J-2 dependents can receive an SSN if they receive employment authorization from the U.S. government and are employed in the U.S.

Who must get/have a Social Security Number?
All individuals working in the U.S. are required to have a Social Security Number. Many jobs do not require you to have a Social Security Number to begin working, but you should submit SSN information to your employer as soon as possible.

Why is everyone asking for your Social Security Number?
International visitors are not required to have a Social Security Number to enter the U.S., open a bank account, sign a lease, or get a Georgia driver's license. However, it is likely that you will be asked for an SSN when trying to do these things. This is because SSNs are used to check your financial credit history (i.e. do you pay bills on time?).

If you are asked for an SSN by a cell phone carrier, bank, landlord, etc. and don’t have one, you should explain that you are not eligible for one. Since you do not have a financial credit history, you may be asked to pay a higher deposit for certain services.

If you are employed and/or eligible for a Social Security Number, how do you get one?
International visitors who are eligible for a Social Security Number, including all scholars who are funded/paid by Georgia Tech, can apply with an Active immigration record and after being inside the U.S. for 10 days. Your immigration record will be activated after you complete the mandatory OIE check-in. If you arrived recently and are not sure if your immigration record has been activated, please email info@oie.gatech.edu to confirm.

Note: If working at Georgia Tech, you may begin working and get paid without a Social Security Number. However, you should apply for an SSN as soon as possible and bring your SSN card to Georgia Tech HR after you receive it.

For a list of required documentation and information of the closest Social Security Office, please see OIE's Social Security Handout.

Social Security Administration offices throughout the U.S. are temporarily closed due to COVID-19. Scholars should contact their host department office or OIE if assistance is needed in obtaining an SSN. You can find more information in this Social Security Administration document (while this document is directed to international students, it is also relevant to scholars).

Protecting your Social Security Number
If you get a Social Security Number, you should protect it in order to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft. While you likely will be asked for your SSN when leasing an apartment, setting up a bill or service (cell phone, utilities), or opening a bank account, you should protect your Social Security Number and do not give it out freely. You should not carry your Social Security card around with you. You should keep your card (and your number) in a safe place and do not give it out to anyone who does not have a legitimate reason to ask for it.

If someone is able to get your Social Security Number, they can open bank accounts or buy things under your name! You can quickly become a victim of identity theft if someone gets your number and they can cause problems far into the future. Do not give your number over the phone or via email, particularly if you did not initiate contact.

If someone is asking you for your Social Security Number and you do not know if you should give it to them, please feel free to email info@oie.gatech.edu and an international student  and scholar advisor will help to advise on what you should do. You may also contact the GT Police Department (see below).

Getting a U.S. driver’s license
If you will get a Georgia driver license, you must apply in person to the Department of Driver Services (DDS). All drivers from other nations (including Canada and U.S. Territories) must pass Georgia’s written, road, and vision tests in order to be a driver license by the State of Georgia. [Click here for more detail about getting a driver’s license, and tips for buying or renting a car]

For general requirements and the most convenient location for written and driving exams, please visit the Department of Driver Services website.  For specific information and requirements for non-US citizens, please visit the DDS webpage for non-U.S. citizens.

Note: You are not required to have a social security number (SSN) to obtain a GA state driver’s license or identification card. If you do not have a SSN and would like to get a license or identification card, you should obtain a Form SSA-L676 (Social Security Card Denial Notice) from the Social Security Administration. Bring your passport, printout of your I-94 electronic record or I-94 card and I-20 or DS-2019 to the Social Security Administration and request a denial notice.  The issuance of this form does not prevent you from being granting a SSN in the future. It simply states that you are currently not eligible for one.

Please see OIE's driver's license handout for information about what documents to bring in order to get a GA driver's license.

Follow these 4 Steps to Make the Process Smoother & Save Time:

  1. Wait 10 days after you arrive in the United States: You may want to apply for a driver’s license or SSN right away, but be patient. The 10-day wait allows time for all the government databases to update with your arrival information.
  2. Make sure your record in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is up-to-date and in Active status for at least 2 days before visiting a DDS office. You can view the status of your SEVIS record in your iStart portal.
  3. Check your forms: Check all your forms to make sure your information is correct. This is data integrity which is very important because having different information on different forms may cause delays.

Buying a Car
Buying a car is a serious financial matter. You are advised to be careful when purchasing any car, especially a used car. While most car dealers are reputable, some try to deceive customers by selling defective cars. You may want to find a friend who knows a lot about automobiles or read a magazine like Consumer Reports to help you decide which model of car will be best for you. It is wise to test-drive the car and to have a mechanic inspect it before you buy. This is to ensure that there are no major defects. For a small fee you can also purchase a vehicle history report from carfax.com by providing the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) from the car.

Once you have negotiated a buying price, make sure that you receive the title certificate for the car and that the seller has signed over the car’s ownership to you. If you are buying a used car, when you pay the money and sign the papers, the vehicle is yours. You do not have the right to return the vehicle and ask for your money back if you find something wrong.

Owning and operating a car is no simple matter. Besides the cost of buying the car, there are other costs involved:

  • Automobile insurance (required by State of Georgia Law)
  • Gasoline, regular motor oil changes, and other car maintenance and repair costs
  • Annual emissions inspections, registration, and taxes
  • Parking fees on campus and in some apartment complexes

You should seriously consider the costs associated with owning a car before deciding to buy one.

There are other options for people who need access to a car occasionally, but not on a daily basis:
Zipcar provides 24 hours a day/7 days a week access to Zipcars parked on campus to borrow for short-term use.  Once you join, you can reserve a car online, let yourself in with your Zipcard, and drive.  Hourly and daily rates are available, and include gas and insurance. Please refer to the website for more information.

There are many rental car companies in Atlanta, including AvisBudget, and Enterprise.  You can find a complete listing of companies, locations, and pricing by doing an internet search.

Rideshare companies such as Uber and Lyft also have a significant presence in Atlanta.

Getting a U.S.-based cell (mobile) phone
You can obtain a U.S.-based phone, phone number, and cell phone calling/data plan by going to a store of a cell phone service provider or going to their website. Major service providers (also called “carriers”) include AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. Google offers phone and data plans through their Google Fi service. [Click here to learn about alternatives to purchasing a U.S.-based phone and phone plan]

Especially when you first arrive in the U.S. and before getting a U.S. phone, you may consider purchasing an international calling card. These pre-paid cards allow you to make calls using any phone including landlines, and are sold at airports, supermarkets, pharmacies and other stores. Be sure to checking the price rates for calling other countries.

You may also consider getting an international SIM card from vendors such as CampusSIMS. With such a SIM card you can use your current phone from the United States to make domestic and international calls. Prices and services vary.

If you are on the GT campus and require support of GTPD for any health, well-being, or safety situation, please do not hesitate to call GTPD at (404) 894-2500. (If you are located anywhere else in the U.S. and need emergency assistance, please call 911). GTPD is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including all weekends and holidays.

The Stingerette is available seven days a week from 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. (excluding Institute holidays and during home football games). To request a ride and for more info, use the free GT Stingerette app for Android and iPhone, or visit www.stingerette.com.

GT on-campus transportation:   Georgia Tech operates multiple bus routes that create a network to provide transportation to all parts of the GT campus, with some routes extending to stores, supermarkets, and restaurants in neighboring areas (and the Midtown MARTA station; see MARTA section above). All GT-operated buses are free and available to the public. You do not need to show any type of ID to use the buses. More info, schedules and routes: https://pts.gatech.edu/stinger-bus-routes.

You will likely see a number of electric scooters throughout the GT campus from multiple operators. Each scooter company has its own phone app which you will need to use the scooter. Scooters charge a fee determined by distance traveled or time used (and sometimes add other fees). While scooters can be an efficient way to get from one part of campus to another, please be very careful if you use a scooter on city streets, especially after dark. Scooters are very small and quiet, which makes them difficult to see by cars (and pedestrians, for that matter). It is illegal to ride a scooter on sidewalks.

If you choose to bring or purchase a bicycle, there are many bike racks throughout the GT campus.
